Use care when heating the clove oil with chloroacetic acid and sodium hydroxide - hot sodium hydroxide is extremely caustic. Have only a small opening in the steam cone so the flask is well balanced - use a clamp if you wish.
The reaction may be performed in the same flask as the oil was isolated in, as shown.
(Note that the flow diagram begins after the reaction has been quenched (acidified).) |

After heating a reaction is always a good stopping point (why?) - if you are short on time, you can stopper the flask and acidify the mixture next time. |
