Evaporate Off the Methylene Chloride Return to Flow Diagram

With a thick-walled hose connected directly to the house vacuum tap, remove the solvent in vacuo.  (CAUTION: Never heat a closed system - be sure the vacuum tap is turned on before you apply any heat.)

Use a bit of heat during removal of the methylene chloride to offset the cooling due to evaporation.  Do not allow the flask to get hot - you could evaporate off some of the eugenol if heated under vacuum.

So, don't apply much heat when the solvent is nearly gone (i.e., when about 1 mL of liquid remains.) At this point, continue to apply vacuum at room temperature for at least 5 minutes to remove as much residual methylene chloride as possible.
