Dry the Solution with Magnesium Sulfate Return to Flow Diagram
Add sufficient magnesium sulfate powder so that a portion of the drying agent does not clump.  To check for this, swirl the flask - free powder will go into suspension and take a few seconds to settle out. (The clumped hydrate will stay on the bottom.)

How it works:

The hydrated form of magnesium sulfate clumps up, so when enough drying agent has been added for some to remain a free-flowing powder it is an indication that enough has been added to remove the water present. (Most other drying agents do not give such a convenient visual indication as magnesium sulfate does.)
