Add sufficient magnesium sulfate powder so that a portion
of the drying agent does not clump. To check for this, swirl the
flask - free powder will go into suspension and take a few seconds to
settle out. (The clumped hydrate will stay on the bottom.)
How it works: The hydrated form of magnesium sulfate clumps up, so when enough drying agent has been added for some to remain a free-flowing powder it is an indication that enough has been added to remove the water present. (Most other drying agents do not give such a convenient visual indication as magnesium sulfate does.) |
