Add 40 mL methylene chloride (same as dichloromethane)
and distillate to separatory funnel.
Use 250 mL separatory funnel. NOTE: Some of these funnels have glass stopcock plugs rather than teflon. If you have one of these, please let the instructor check that it is adequately greased. (The teflon stopcocks, like the one shown, do not require grease.) |

The methylene chloride is more dense than water and forms the lower layer. |

After shaking and venting for one minute, allow the layers to separate and, with the stopper removed, drain the lower layer. |

After draining the organic layer, add another 40 mL methylene chloride and repeat the process. Combine the two organic extracts. |
