Identification of an Unknown Alcohol

by Conversion to the Acetate Ester

We will reflux the mixture for 45 minutes (it does not require an hour as shown by GC studies), then work it up using three aqueous washes rather than one to remove more of the left over alcohol. We will have unknown alcohols and the boiling point of the product is an important clue as to its identity.
